Gloria Latham is the Founder of Semperviva Yoga and the Director of Yoga Teacher Training at Semperviva Yoga College. Gloria is one of the most influential forces of yoga in Canada. Her passion for yoga has led her to open five Semperviva Yoga Studios in Vancouver, and to create uplifting and transformative retreats and teacher trainings on Galiano Island and the island of Kythira in Greece.
The Spice Mistress is honoured to welcome Gloria Latham as the focus of this month’s Pancha Q.
Gloria is one of those rare teachers who engages her students on a deeper level that is both powerful and profound. She is more than just a yoga teacher. She is a teacher of joy. A teacher of life. Woven throughout her teachings is always the wisdom that encourages her students to take control of their own lives. Not only are her classes designed to detoxify, cleanse and strengthen on a physical level; they work equally as powerfully on a mental and spiritual level to de-stress, provide clarity, embrace one’s personal and individual challenges and to let go of the unnecessary clutter.
1. How do you begin your day?
Gloria: I will always start with at least a short personal practice of yoga in the morning. I don’t like to go out into the world before I’ve adjusted my attitude and had a great cup of coffee.
2. What’s one piece of life changing health advice you can share with others?
Gloria: Don’t stop and start your yoga practice. It’s like taking one step forward and two steps back. You will never reach deeper levels of insight without discipline.
3. What’s one thing that gives you hope for the future?
Gloria: My children.
4. Any lifestyle ‘Crimes against Wisdom’ (Prajnaparadha) that challenge you?
Gloria: I think to be unkind is a crime. If we learn nothing else in yoga maybe we can learn to practice ahimsa… non-violence in thought, action or speech against self or another.
5. A moment of beauty that inspired you today?
Gloria: Seeing a woman recovering from a car accident come back to yoga and feel extremely happy to be there.
Thank you for the interview, Gloria. Om Shanti!
