Danielle LaPorte is the outspoken creator of the site that’s been deemed, “the best place online for kick-ass spirituality” and named by Forbes as one of the “Top 100 Websites for Women” where over a million visitors have gone for her straight up advice on everything from time management and creativity, to forgiveness and desire.
The Spice Mistress is honoured to welcome Danielle LaPorte as the focus of this month’s Pancha Q.
My definition of holistic is along these lines: The place where ambition meets inner peace, consciousness meets cash, grace can be gritty, and compassion abounds. A lot of entrepreneurial hustling brought me to a place where I’m most interested in love as a verb. And, what I consider to be the most creative force in the universe: desire.
Danielle has coached thousands of people to define what success truly means for them and wrote about that in the best seller, The Fire Starter Sessions (Random House/Crown, April 2012).
As the executive director of a Washington DC think tank, Danielle managed a team of futurists studying global trends for the likes of the Pentagon and the World Bank…though she never went to college herself. She ran her own communications agency, “promoting visionary people & projects,” including Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, philosophers, and a few old folk heroes.
A popular inspirational speaker and poet, and former news show commentator, Danielle has been featured in Elle, Body + Soul, More Magazine, Flare, Vogue Australia, Better Homes & Gardens, Globe & Mail, The National Post, The Huffington Post, Entertainment Tonight, USA Today and BusinessWeek.com.
1. How do you begin your day?
Danielle: If I get to bed earlier enough the night before, I get up between 5:00am and 6:30am. Can I just stop here and say that that’s REVOLUTIONARY for me. I’m nocturnal by nature — I think like an alley cat, “What can I do after dark?” But going to bed at about 9pm and getting up before the sun rises has been transformative. Less stress, more peace, more creative space.
I have hot water and lemon, and stretch while I listen to some chanting, usually Deva Premal & Miten. And then, I rock right out. I hit my elliptical, whom I’ve named Venus, and I run a few kilometres to some 80’s rock and hip hop. Word.
By then the sun is up. My boy and the dog and I meander to his school. Then I head home, whip up a green smoothie and I literealy run up my staircase to my studio to start my “work” day. Because I’m always, always pumped to do what I do.
2. What’s one piece of life changing health advice you can share with others?
Danielle: Processed food is mostly evil. Eat clean and you will feel so much sexier.
3. What’s one thing that gives you hope for the future?
Danielle: My boy. He sings all the time. Raps. Rock opera. Folk. Morning, noon and night. His happiness gives me so much hope for the future.
4. Any lifestyle ‘Crimes against Wisdom’ (Prajnaparadha) that challenge you?
Danielle: Well I do love me some trashy entertainment magazines, especially in a hot bath eating chips. Usually past my bed time.
5. A moment of beauty that inspired you today?
Danielle: This line from a Ben Okri’s poem, Aphorisms and Fragments: “Humility is the watchword at creativity’s gate.” Okri’s a master.
